Dragon Warrior

The first console RPG released in America, this was simply a greatly fun game. It was basic, true, and only had one character, true, but that didn't stop it. The plot...save a princess, then go slay the evil Dragonlord. And have a good time doing it. I liked the connections to the ancient hero Erdrick. Gave a good sense of background, actually.

Final Fantasy

This was the originator of Square's RPG system. It lacked the Active-Time Battles of the more recent Final Fantasy games, and used a standard turn-based system. This was not a bad RPG. Unfortunately, it was too dependent on gaining levels, which took entirely too long. The game was quite difficult.
